Funny Wine Name Generator
Grape puns and deadpan labels for any bottle
Generate funny wine names for homemade bottles, gift labels and party menus: varietal puns like Pinot More, Merlot Hanging Fruit and No Chard Feelings, mock-grand estates like Château Cardboard and honest labels like Tuesday Night Red. They are invented joke labels, not real wines.
About funny wine names
Wine labels are usually solemn: an estate, a vintage, a place. That makes them easy to tease, and the simplest way is to swap a grape into a phrase everyone knows. Merlot ends in a sound that passes for "low" and "hello", Chardonnay shortens to a Chard that stands in for "hard" and "card", Riesling passes for "reason" and Syrah for "sir". That is how you get Merlot Hanging Fruit, No Chard Feelings, Voice of Riesling and Yes Syrah.
The second vein is the label itself. Mock-grand names keep the French and drop the grandeur (Château Cardboard, Clos Enough, Domaine de la Discount), and deadpan labels say what the back of the bottle never does: Tuesday Night Red, Pairs With Leftovers, Second Cheapest on the Menu. Winemaking has its own jargon to play with as well, from the punt in the base of a bottle (Punt Intended) to the lees left after fermentation (Lees Is More).
The list also has gift labels for birthdays, weddings and retirements, names for a first homemade batch and a few pompous animals. Every entry is an invented joke label, not a listing of real bottles. Real wineries use puns too, so search a name before you put it on anything you plan to sell.
How to choose funny wine names
- Put the grape in the joke only when it is in the bottle. Merlot and Behold on a Merlot is a pun; on a Riesling it is a mistake your guests will point out.
- For a gift, name the occasion instead of the wine. Goodbye Tension, Hello Pension for a retirement or Eat, Drink and Be Married for a wedding works on any bottle you relabel.
- Homemade batches suit the honest names. First Batch, Be Kind and Uncle Ray's Questionable Red lower expectations before the cork is out.
- Keep it short enough to read across a table. Two to four words fit a standard label in large type; save the long ones, like Pairs With Whatever's in the Fridge, for a back label or a menu.
- If the bottle will be sold, search the name first. Wine names are registered like any other brand name, and the well-known puns are often in use already.
Frequently asked questions
What are some funny wine names?
Varietal puns are the classics: Pinot More, Merlot Down, Die Chard, Zin and Bear It and Everything Happens for a Riesling. If puns are not your style, try a deadpan label such as Red, Probably or It Was on Sale, or a mock-grand one like Château Trying Too Hard.
Are these real wines with funny names?
No. These are invented joke labels for homemade wine, gifts, party menus and fiction, and the list does not catalog real bottles. Plenty of real wineries do sell wines with pun names, so a name here may resemble one on a shelf somewhere.
What is a good funny name for homemade wine?
Names that admit where it was made tend to land: Bathtub Bordeaux, Basement Beaujolais, Kitchen Counter Cabernet or Estate Bottled in a Kitchen. Fruit wines have their own puns, such as Pear Pressure, Elderberry Statesman and Respect Your Elderberries.
Can I print one of these names on a label I sell?
For gifts and personal bottles, go ahead. For wine you sell, search the name yourself first, because brand names for wine are registered and common puns are frequently in use already. Your country's labeling rules may also limit what a label can say about grape, region and vintage.
