Dorm Name Generator

Real dorms are named in a handful of predictable ways, and copying those patterns is what makes an invented campus feel lived-in. The oldest halls carry the surnames of founders, donors and presidents (Pembroke Court, Ellsworth House), then come halls named for local geography and trees (Lakeview Residence, Sycamore Suites), and finally the abstract civic names that universities reach for when the donors run out: Founders Hall, Centennial Hall, Unity Commons. The suffix tells you the building's shape and age. Hall and House suggest brick and ivy, Tower means a 1960s high-rise, Commons or Village means a newer suite-style complex, and Court, Quad and Row describe how the buildings sit around a lawn.

Students rarely use those names. Floors and suites get nicknames that describe the view, the temperature or the people: The Fishbowl for a glass-fronted lounge, The Furnace or The Icebox for a room with a broken radiator, Ramen Row for a hallway of kitchenettes, and Procrastination Station for the one room where nobody studies. Themed living-learning communities (Writers House, Eco Village, Maison Française) sit somewhere in between, official but friendly.
