Dice Game Name Generator
Titles for games played with dice
Generate dice game names for a tabletop design, a family or party game, a pub game or the game a fantasy tavern plays, from Six High and Widow's Cup to Roll for the Hoard and Dead Man's Pips.
About dice game names
Dice games tend to carry shorter, plainer names than card or board games. The folk classics are a single blunt word or a phrase from the table: Pig, Hazard, Zilch, Farkle, Bunco, Shut the Box, Liar's Dice. Many are named for what happens in play, such as the score you chase (Ten Thousand), the way a turn ends (Drop Dead) or the thing you build (Beetle). A new title can borrow that habit.
This list holds 1,000 titles in several styles. There are short folk-style names (Goose Egg, Tuppence), push-your-luck party titles (Bank or Bust, Poke the Bear), roll-and-write and strategy titles (Ink the Orchard, Senate of Sixes), and in-world games for a fantasy tavern, a pirate deck, an Old West riverboat or a sci-fi cantina (Widow's Cup, Dead Man's Pips, Seven Up Sally, Void Cubes). Family titles, pub games, puns on pips and bones, and number names such as Six High fill out the rest. A small share are traditional games, kept as reference points and named in the FAQ below.
For a tabletop design, treat any of these as a working title and search for published games with the same name before you print anything. For a tavern scene in a roleplaying campaign, pick the name first and let it suggest the rules.
How to choose dice game names
- Name the moment players shout about. Bank or Bust, Drop the Lowest and Call the Bluff each tell you the key decision before anyone reads the rules.
- Let the title hint that dice are involved. Pips, bones, cubes, a cup, a throw or a number such as six can do that without spelling out the word dice.
- For an in-world tavern game, tie the name to the setting's people and dangers (Goblin's Eye, Bosun's Bones, Rattlesnake Sixes), then invent one rule that explains the name.
- Keep family titles concrete and countable. Ladybug Spots and Snowman Buttons tell a child what to count before the first roll.
- Search BoardGameGeek and game store listings for a title before you pay for art or printing. Nothing on this list has been checked against published games.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good name for a dice game?
Short and sayable, with a hint of the dice or of the key decision. Traditional games set the pattern with names like Pig and Shut the Box, and titles such as Six High, Press Your Pips or Shake the Cup follow it. If people can call it across a table, it works.
Which names on the list are traditional dice games?
A small share. Pig, Hazard, Grand Hazard, Liar's Dice, Dudo, Mia, Chuck-a-Luck, Crown and Anchor, Ship Captain and Crew, Shut the Box, Knucklebones, Poker Dice, Zilch, Ten Thousand, Craps, Sic Bo, Cee-lo, Generala, Mexico, Midnight, Beetle, Drop Dead, Going to Boston, Aces in the Pot, Passe-dix and Under and Over Seven are folk games with long histories. They are here as reference points. The rest were written as new title ideas, though some may match games that already exist.
Can I use one of these as the title of a game I publish?
You can take any of them as a working title. The list was screened for duplicates and offensive terms, and nobody has compared it with published games, so search the title yourself before you commit to it. The traditional entries, such as Pig or Hazard, describe existing games rather than new ones.
How do I name a dice game for a D&D tavern?
Pick a name that sounds like the locals coined it, such as Goblin's Eye, Widow's Cup, Three Kobolds or Gravedigger's Dice, and give it one simple rule the players can learn in a sentence. Any stakes are part of the fiction, so a few copper pieces or a bowl of stew is plenty.
