A competition name has to do three things on a flyer or a Slack announcement: say what people will compete at, promise a prize or glory, and sound like fun rather than an obligation. The most reliable structure is a subject word plus a contest word, and the contest word sets the tone. Cup, Classic, Open and Invitational feel official; Showdown, Throwdown, Rumble and Smackdown feel playful; Prize, Award and Honors feel prestigious; Sweepstakes, Giveaway and Draw tell entrants it is luck rather than skill. Alliteration (Pickle Prix, Debug Derby, Barista Brawl) makes a name stick after one hearing, and a pun on the subject (Soup-er Bowl, Hall of Flame) is the fastest way to make a workplace contest feel less corporate.

Different settings have their own conventions. Sales contests borrow from racing and gold rushes, hackathons use build, ship and jam, schools use bowl and bee, cook-offs use off and battle, and fitness challenges use streak, sprint and steps. Community events are usually named for the thing being judged, whether pumpkins, sandcastles or ugly sweaters.
