Clue Character Name Generator
Classic suspects plus new title-and-color names
Generate Clue character names: the classic suspects such as Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard and Professor Plum, then new suspects in the same title-plus-color style, like Captain Cobalt, Dame Marigold and Inspector Ink.
About Clue character names
Clue, sold as Cluedo outside North America, names its suspects on one simple recipe: an honorific or rank followed by a color used as a surname. The six classic suspects are Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Professor Plum, and the victim is Mr. Boddy in North American editions and Dr. Black in British ones. Editions differ in the details: Mr. Green is Reverend Green in the UK, older North American boxes spell it Miss Scarlet, Dr. Orchid took Mrs. White's place in 2016, and the Master Detective edition added Miss Peach, Monsieur Brunette, Madame Rose and Sergeant Gray.
Those 15 names open the list. The other 485 are new suspects written in the same style for murder mystery parties, homemade boards, group costumes and classroom versions. They were written for this page and are not taken from the game. They rotate through military ranks, nobility, police and public office, clergy and school titles, household staff, family titles and a few continental honorifics, and no color is used more than three times.
A good suspect name tells you who the person is at a glance. The title gives the role and the color gives the costume, so Captain Cobalt, Dame Marigold and Chef Paprika each arrive with an outfit already chosen.
How to choose Clue character names
- Start from the costume. Choose a color every guest can find in a wardrobe, then add the title: Mrs. Magenta and Mr. Khaki are easier to dress than Count Cochineal.
- Give each guest a different kind of title so the roles are clear: one rank, one noble, one professional, one servant, one relative. Colonel Cinnamon, Lady Lapis, Dr. Saffron, Butler Biscuit and Aunt Auburn make a full cast.
- Keep the colors far apart on a homemade board. Six suspects need six pawns that players can tell apart at a glance, so do not seat Miss Cerise next to Captain Crimson.
- Alliteration helps people remember a name after one introduction: Sergeant Sage, Mayor Marigold, Professor Persimmon. Mix in a few pairs that do not match so the cast does not turn into a tongue twister.
- For a classroom or family version, favor jobs and family titles over ranks of nobility. Coach Canary, Nurse Mint, Principal Pumpkin and Granny Ginger are easy for young players to say and to act.
Frequently asked questions
What are the names of the Clue characters?
The six classic suspects are Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Professor Plum. The victim is Mr. Boddy in North American editions and Dr. Black in British ones, where Mr. Green is Reverend Green. Names and titles have changed between editions, so look at your own box if you need its exact cast.
Which names in this list are from the game?
The first 15: the six classic suspects, both names of the victim, Reverend Green, the older spelling Miss Scarlet, Dr. Orchid, and Miss Peach, Monsieur Brunette, Madame Rose and Sergeant Gray from the Master Detective edition. Everything after them, from Chef Cherry onward, was written for this page in the same style. We have not compared the new names with every edition and spin-off, so one may match a character we do not know of.
How do you make up a Clue-style character name?
Pair a title with a color and use the color as the surname. Ranks, noble titles, professions and family titles all work, as in Admiral Azure, Baroness Blush, Inspector Ink and Widow Willow. Less common color words such as Celadon, Verdigris or Mazarine keep a large cast from repeating itself.
Can I use these names for a murder mystery party?
Yes, that is what the new names are written for. Send each guest a name with the invitation so the color doubles as a dress code, and pick titles that suggest a motive, such as Solicitor Sable, Heiress Holly or Sommelier Merlot. The list keeps to a board-game tone, with no gore and no real cases.
