Generate short clan tags of 2 to 5 characters, most with the clan name they stand for: VNM (Venom), NTFL (Nightfall), LTS (Last Team Standing), plus whole-word tags like TALON, AEGIS and RUNE.

About clan tag names

A clan tag is the short label a clan wears in front of its players' names, usually inside square brackets, in shooters such as Call of Duty and Battlefield and in many other games with a tag field. The field is small, so a tag is an abbreviation of the clan's name or one short word. Every entry here is 2 to 5 characters in capitals, and where the tag stands for something longer, the long form follows in parentheses, so you get a clan name and its tag together.

There are four common ways to make one. Drop the vowels from a strong word: VNM (Venom), PHNX (Phoenix), BSTN (Bastion). Squeeze a two-word name into four letters: NTFL (Nightfall), LNWF (Lone Wolf). Take the initials of a phrase: LTS (Last Team Standing), NGU (Never Give Up). Or use a word that already fits, such as TALON, AEGIS or RUNE. The list also has gamer shorthand, keyboard keys, chat initialisms and a handful of tags with digits.

Nothing here has been checked against any game. Tag length limits differ from game to game, some games assign the code for you, and we cannot know which tags other clans already wear, so test your pick in the game before the clan commits to it.

How to choose clan tag names

  • Check the limit first. Tag fields differ between games, so count the characters your game allows before you fall for a five-letter tag.
  • Say it out loud. A tag gets called out in voice chat, so pick one that can be spoken: HVK reads as Havoc and TKDN as Takedown.
  • Make the tag point back to the clan name. If the clan is Eye of the Storm, EOTS works; a tag nobody can expand is a tag nobody remembers.
  • Put the tag next to a few player names before you decide. It should look like one team on the scoreboard and should not spell something else when it runs into the name.
  • Read it backwards and look it up before you commit. Three or four letters can match an abbreviation you do not want on your team, and many games filter tags.

Frequently asked questions

What is a clan tag?

It is a short abbreviation, usually 2 to 5 characters, that a clan's members show with their player names so others can see who plays together. It normally shortens the clan's full name, which is why most entries here pair the tag with a long form, as in WLFP (Wolfpack) or SOTS (Sons of the Storm).

What are some good clan tag names?

Tags that read at a glance work best: VNM (Venom), RVN (Raven), PHNX (Phoenix), KRKN (Kraken) and BLTZ (Blitz) from the vowel-dropped group, or whole words such as TALON, AEGIS, FORGE and RUNE. For a lighter clan, try AFK (Away From Keyboard), DAD (Dads After Dark) or 404 (Not Found).

How many characters can a clan tag have?

It depends on the game. Every tag in this list is between 2 and 5 characters, and most are 3 or 4, but the limit and the characters allowed are set by each game, so check the tag field in yours. If your game allows only three, entries such as VPR (Viper), LTS (Last Team Standing) and NGU (Never Give Up) still fit.

Has anyone checked whether these tags are already in use?

No. We have not tested any tag in any game, and short tags are shared by many clans. Treat the list as ideas, try your pick in the game itself, and keep a second choice ready.
