About Call of Duty clan names

In Call of Duty a clan shows up as a tag: a few characters in brackets in front of every member's name, in the lobby, on the scoreboard and in the killfeed. Recent games allow up to five characters, and older ones such as Modern Warfare 2 allowed four. The full clan name lives everywhere else, in your group chat and on your channel, so most squads want both a name and a tag that shortens it.

This list is written in the language of the series. There are map names for people who have held the same spot for ten years (Nuketown Homeowners Association, Rust Tower Tenants), Warzone names about the Gulag, plates and buy stations (Gulag Graduates, Three Plate Minimum), and Zombies names about perks, the Mystery Box and high rounds (Missed the Bus, Jugg First Always). Others come from killstreaks, the prestige and camo grind, objective modes and lobby slang, such as One Kill Short, Damascus Grinders and Nobody Caps B.

For a serious squad there are invented task force and company names in the series' own register, such as Task Force Cinder and Coldwater Company, plus radio calls like Stay Frosty. About one entry in nine is a ready tag of five characters or fewer, such as VSAT, JUGG or 1v4.

How to choose Call of Duty clan names

  • Work out the tag with the name. A tag holds five characters at most in recent games, so check that your pick shortens well: Gulag Graduates can wear GULAG, and Damascus Grinders can wear DMSC.
  • Match the name to what you play. Pack-a-Punch Patrons suits a Zombies group, Final Circle Society suits a Warzone squad, and Nobody Caps B is for people who live in Domination.
  • Keep it clean. A tag is shown to every lobby you join, offensive ones can be reported, and a joke about the game ages better than an edgy one.
  • Make up your own unit. Skip the names of real military units and of pro teams: an invented name such as Task Force Lantern or Halberd Company sounds the part without borrowing anyone else's history.
  • Let the squad vote. Put three or four favorites in the group chat and say each one out loud, because you will hear it on comms far more often than you read it.

Frequently asked questions

What are good clan names for COD?

Good ones tell other players what kind of group you are in a few words. For a joke clan, try Nuketown Homeowners Association, Care Package Thieves or Slide Cancel Culture from this list. For a squad that takes ranked play seriously, names such as Task Force Cinder, Longbow Actual or Deniable Assets read better on a scoreboard.

How long can a Call of Duty clan tag be?

Recent Call of Duty games allow up to five characters in a clan tag, and older games such as Modern Warfare 2 allowed four. That is why about one entry in nine here is already tag sized, such as GULAG, VSAT, JUGG and 1v4. A longer name needs a short form, so pick the two together.

Do these names work for Warzone and COD Mobile?

Yes. A large share of the list is about Warzone itself, with names such as Gulag Graduates, Buy Station Regulars and Exfil or Bust, and the map, killstreak and task force names fit any game in the series. COD Mobile has its own clan system, and the same names and tags suit it.

Is another clan already using these names?

We have not checked, and some of these will be in use somewhere. In the main games a clan tag is only text on your profile, so more than one group can wear the same one. Where a game registers clans by name, the game itself will tell you when a name is taken, so keep two or three backups.
