About christian names
Christian names come from four main wells. The oldest is the Bible: Hebrew names such as Elijah ("my God is Yahweh"), Nathaniel ("God has given") and Abigail ("my father's joy") from the Old Testament, and the Greek and Aramaic names of the apostles and early church, Peter, Andrew, Lydia, Priscilla, Timothy. The second is the calendar of saints, which added Latin and Greek names like Cecilia, Augustine, Benedict, Agnes and Christopher, and later Celtic and Germanic saints such as Brigid, Kevin, Hildegard and Wolfgang. The third is the virtue tradition of the Reformation, when English and New England Protestants named daughters and sons Faith, Hope, Mercy, Patience, Verity and Clemency. The fourth is the church's spread: every Christian culture reshaped the core names, so John became Ioannes, Giovanni, Juan, Ivan, Hans, Sean and Yohannes, and West African and Ethiopian believers coined names like Oluwaseun ("God has done this") and Tesfaye ("my hope").
This generator mixes all four so you can find a name with weight behind it. Use it for a baby name with a story, a confirmation or baptismal name, a character in historical or Christian fiction, or simply to see how wide the tradition runs. Many of the names carry a meaning or a saint's feast day, which makes them easy to explain and easy to remember.
Tips for choosing a name
- Look up the meaning before you commit. Most Hebrew names are small sentences about God (Isaiah: "Yahweh is salvation"), and that meaning is often the reason families choose them.
- For a confirmation or baptismal name, pick a saint whose life you actually connect with; the name is a patron, not just a sound.
- Virtue names (Mercy, Verity, Amity, Clemency) read as old-fashioned in a good way and pair well with a more common surname.
- If you want a Christian name that is not obviously biblical, try the early church and patristic names: Irenaeus, Polycarp, Monica, Perpetua, Athanasius, Helena.
- Match the language of the name to the family or character. Juan, Giovanni, Johann and Ivan are all John, and the right form says a lot about where the person is from.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a Christian name?
Traditionally, a name given at baptism, which for centuries meant a biblical name, a saint's name, or a name with explicitly Christian meaning such as Christopher ("Christ-bearer") or Faith. Today people use it more loosely for any name rooted in the Bible or Christian history. In older British usage, "Christian name" simply meant first name.
Are these names suitable for Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox families?
Yes. The biblical and virtue names are popular across Protestant traditions, the saint names are classic Catholic and Orthodox choices, and the Greek and Slavic forms (Anastasios, Kirill, Fyodor, Theodosia) come straight from Orthodox naming. The list marks none of them by denomination, so pick what fits.
Which Christian names are the most popular today?
In English-speaking countries, biblical names dominate: Noah, Elijah, James, Benjamin, Samuel, Caleb and Isaiah for boys; Abigail, Hannah, Elizabeth, Leah, Naomi and Eva for girls. Grace, Faith and Hope remain the most common virtue names.
Can I use these names for characters in fiction?
Absolutely. Choose by period and place: Puritan characters suit virtue names like Prudence and Temperance, medieval settings suit saints' names like Anselm and Hedwig, and a modern West African or Ethiopian character might be Chukwuemeka, Ngozi or Tesfaye.
