Christian names come from four main wells. The third is the virtue tradition of the Reformation, when English and New England Protestants named daughters and sons Faith, Hope, Mercy, Patience, Verity and Clemency. The fourth is the church's spread: every Christian culture reshaped the core names, so John became Ioannes, Giovanni, Juan, Ivan, Hans, Sean and Yohannes, and West African and Ethiopian believers coined names like Oluwaseun ("God has done this") and Tesfaye ("my hope").
