Chip names work on two levels: the brand on the front of the bag and the flavor printed underneath it. Chip brands usually signal one of three things: provenance (a farm, a coast, a ridge, a kettle), a texture promise (crunch, crisp, ripple, thin-cut), or a personality, which is where the puns live. The classic flavors are plain descriptions (Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Onion), but limited editions and bold lines add a hook word that promises intensity or fun: Dill Pickle Dynamite, Habanero Heatwave, Chili Lime Lightning. Alliteration and rhyme are everywhere in this aisle because they are easy to remember, and heat levels get their own vocabulary of fire, lava, alarm bells and dragons.

Region matters too. British and Irish bags say crisps and favor savory dinner flavors like Roast Chicken and Prawn Cocktail; Canadian shelves have All Dressed and Ketchup; American bags say chips and push cheese, ranch, barbecue and pickle. The names here mix all three so a brand, a product line and a flavor can fit together.
