Chef Name Generator

Chef names carry the reputation of a kitchen. In classical French and Italian brigades, the chef de cuisine is addressed as "Chef" plus a first or full name, and the name itself often signals the tradition: Escoffier, Bocuse, and Robuchon for haute cuisine, Bottura and the ubiquitous Nonna Rosa for Italian kitchens. Modern restaurant culture is far more global, and today's most famous chefs are Danish, Mexican, Peruvian, Thai, Ethiopian-Swedish, and Israeli-British, so a believable contemporary chef roster should sound like a real city's restaurant scene rather than a single country.

Different kitchens produce different kinds of names. Fine dining calls for full, elegant names that fit on a menu cover. Diners and family restaurants run on nicknames like Sal, Marge, Mama Ruthie, and Cookie, and food trucks and TV cooking shows reward personality names with a spice or ingredient in them (Saffron Sadie, Cayenne Ortiz). When picking a name for a character, decide the cuisine, the price point, and the era first. A three-star Parisian kitchen in 1975, a Tokyo sushi counter, and a Texas barbecue pit each have their own naming register, and the wrong name is as jarring as the wrong menu.
