Generate brandable names that are easy to say, spell and own: coined words like Veltro and Quenza, evocative compounds like Driftmere and Copperleaf, surname-style marks, pairings like Lumen & Lark, and modern coinages ending in -ly and -ify. Made for startups, products, Shopify stores and domains.

About brandable names

A brandable name is one that means nothing until you fill it with meaning, which is why it can be owned. Descriptive names (Fast Plumbing, Organic Soap Co) say what you do but cannot be trademarked and are taken everywhere. Brandable names sit at the other end: coined words like Veltro, Quenza and Nuvella, compounds that evoke a feeling without describing a product (Driftmere, Copperleaf, Emberfold), surname-style marks (Calder, Whitlock, Penrose) and playful modern forms like Snugly or Sproutify. Being arbitrary or merely suggestive, they clear trademark searches more often and the .com is far more likely to be free.

The good ones share a few mechanical traits. They are two or three syllables, they are spelled the way they sound so a customer can type them after hearing them once, and they avoid double consonants, silent letters and ambiguous vowels. They also carry a tone: Latinate endings in -a, -o and -ella feel warm and consumer-facing, hard consonants like -ix and -vo feel technical, and English compounds built from trees, weather and landscape feel crafted and local.

Treat the list as a shortlist machine. Pull ten names, say each aloud in a sentence, search the trademark register and the domain, then keep the three that survive. The name you can own beats the name you merely like.

How to choose brandable names

  • Run the radio test: say the name to someone once and ask them to type it. If they spell it wrong (Lumavo vs Lumavoh), move on or simplify it.
  • Search before you fall in love. Check the USPTO or your national trademark register for identical and similar-sounding marks in your class, then the .com and the main social handles, in that order.
  • Match the sound to the product. Soft Latinate names (Fiora, Mirelle, Belora) suit beauty, food and home; crisp names with k, x and v (Corvix, Kestro, Quillix) suit tech and tools; English compounds (Fernhollow, Ironbrook) suit crafts, outdoor and local brands.
  • Avoid trendy spellings that will date quickly. Dropped vowels (Flickr-style) and -ly and -ify suffixes are recognisable eras; use them only if you want that exact association.
  • Check how it reads as one lowercase word with no spaces, since that is how it appears in a URL and a handle. Lumen & Lark becomes lumenandlark; Salt & Sable becomes saltandsable.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name brandable?

It is distinctive, short, easy to pronounce and spell, free of existing meaning in your category, and available as a trademark and domain. Coined words (Veltro, Oriva) score highest because nobody else is using them; suggestive compounds (Driftmere, Emberfold) come close; descriptive phrases score lowest.

Are brandable names better than descriptive names?

For a company you plan to grow, yes. A descriptive name is easy to understand on day one but impossible to trademark, hard to own online and limiting if you expand beyond the thing it describes. A brandable name takes a little marketing to explain but becomes an asset you exclusively control.

How do I check if a brandable name is available?

Search the trademark database for your country (USPTO TESS in the US, EUIPO in the EU, UKIPO in the UK) for the exact name and close variants in your product class, then check the .com and any country domain you need, then the social handles. Do the trademark search first, because a free domain with a conflicting trademark is worthless.

Can I use one of these names for my startup or Shopify store?

Yes. The names are generated, not reserved, so someone somewhere may already be using one. Treat each as a candidate: verify availability in your market and register the trademark and domain as soon as you commit.
