Every nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender draws its names from a real-world culture, which is why the world feels lived-in. The Water Tribes borrow from Inuit and Yupik languages: Sokka, Katara, Hakoda, Kanna, Yue, Pakku, and Korra all share the short, hard-K sounds and open vowels of Arctic names. The Earth Kingdom is Chinese, with names like Toph, Bumi, Long Feng, Jet, and the Beifong family. The Fire Nation leans Japanese with a Chinese undertone (Zuko, Azula, Iroh, Ozai, Sozin, Roku, Mai), and the Air Nomads take Tibetan and Sanskrit-derived names such as Gyatso, Yangchen, Tenzin, Jinora, and Pema.

The pattern is consistent enough that you can usually guess a character's nation from the name alone. Water Tribe names often end in -a or -k (Katara, Noatak, Nukka), Fire Nation names carry sharp z and k sounds (Azula, Zuko, Kuzon), Earth Kingdom names are frequently one or two syllables of Mandarin origin (Wei, Lian, Shu, Da Wei), and Air Nomad names come from Tibetan Buddhist naming (Tashi, Norbu, Dawa, Yeshe).
