About arts organization names

A nonprofit arts organization's name usually does two jobs: it says what kind of body this is, and it gives people a place or an image to remember. The structure word carries real information. A council or commission suggests a regional body that makes grants and speaks for local artists. A foundation, trust, fund or endowment suggests money held and given. An alliance, league or guild suggests members, and a project or initiative suggests one piece of work, such as a mural or a schools program. "Friends of" belongs to a group that supports a single theater, museum or collection.

  • Replace the invented place with your own, and use the name locals really say for the area (a river, a county, a neighborhood) rather than a general word like Community.
  • Name the art form or the people you serve when it matters to funders. Youth, Veterans, Folk Arts or Chamber Music tells a grant reviewer the mission in one line.
  • Say the short form aloud. Board members and donors will cut the name to its initials or its first two words, so make sure both sound right.
  • Search before you file: your state or national charity register, the web and social handles. A name on this list may already belong to a working organization.
