Generate names that fit The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto): consorts, ladies-in-waiting, eunuchs, court physicians and pleasure-district courtesans in the same Chinese-meets-Japanese register as Maomao, Jinshi, Gyokuyou and Gaoshun. Built for fan fiction, OCs and palace-intrigue worldbuilding.
About apothecary diaries names
The Apothecary Diaries is set in Li, an empire modelled on Tang-dynasty China, but Natsu Hyuuga writes it in Japanese, so every character name is a Chinese name read two ways. The English translation keeps that split: some names arrive in Chinese-style romanization (Maomao, Gaoshun, Lihua, Xiaolan, Hongniang, Fengming) and others in Japanese on'yomi readings of the same kind of characters (Jinshi, Gyokuyou, Lishu, Suiren, Lakan, Basen, Rikuson, Gyokuen). Both registers are two short syllables built from flower, jewel, colour, season and virtue words, which is why the names feel related even when they look different on the page.
Station shapes the name too. High consorts and the Empress Dowager carry elegant single readings (Gyokuyou, Lihua, Anshi) and are usually addressed by title. Ladies-in-waiting get brighter flower names such as Yinghua, Guiyuan and Ailan. Courtesans of the Verdigris House take stage names like Meimei, Pairin and Joka, and servants and children get doubled or diminutive forms: Xiaolan, Maomao, Kyou-u. Maomao's own name is a herbalist's joke, and the series is full of medicinal plants that make good names in their own right.
This generator mixes canon characters with original names in both readings, including herb-derived names for apothecaries and physicians, so you can populate a whole rear palace, a medical office or a brothel district without breaking the setting's voice.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick one reading per character and stick with it: a Chinese-style name (Meilan, Xuemei, Zhenghao) or a Japanese on'yomi reading (Seiran, Gyokurin, Ryuusen). Mixing both styles across a cast is canon; mixing them inside one name is not.
- Match the name to rank. Keep consorts and nobles to two refined syllables, give ladies-in-waiting flower or gem names, and use doubled forms like Duoduo or diminutives with Xiao- for servants, children and apprentices.
- For apothecaries and physicians, borrow from the medicine chest: Danggui, Huangqi, Fuling and Gancao are real herb names and sit naturally beside Maomao and Luomen.
- Address high-ranking characters by title plus name (Consort, Lady, Master, Doctor) in dialogue rather than inventing honorific suffixes; the English translation keeps titles plain.
- If your OC belongs to a named clan such as La, Shi, U or Ma, hint at it with the first syllable the way Lakan, Lahan and Luomen share La, rather than adding a separate surname.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Apothecary Diaries names look both Chinese and Japanese?
The story is set in a fictional Chinese-style empire but written in Japanese, so names are Chinese characters that can be read in Chinese (Maomao, Gaoshun, Lihua) or in Japanese on'yomi (Jinshi, Gyokuyou, Lakan). The official English translation uses a mix of both, and this generator does the same.
Can I use these names for an Apothecary Diaries OC or fan fiction?
Yes. The original names here are free to use anywhere; the canon names (Maomao, Jinshi, Gyokuyou and so on) belong to the series and are meant for fan works, not commercial projects.
What makes a good name for a consort versus a servant?
Consorts and high ladies use short, elegant readings with flower or jewel meanings and are addressed by title, while servants and children get diminutives and doubled syllables such as Xiaolan, Maomao or Tangtang. Courtesans take memorable stage names like Meimei, Pairin and Joka.
Are there herb names I can use for apothecary characters?
Yes. The list includes names drawn from traditional medicine such as Danggui (angelica), Huangqi (astragalus), Fuling (poria) and Gancao (licorice), which fit apothecaries, physicians and their apprentices in the spirit of Maomao's own name.
