Generate antakshari team names in romanized Hindi, Hinglish and English: the classic rhyming trio of Deewane, Parwane and Mastane, music-word names like Sargam Squad, Taal Titans and Mehfil Mandali, and self-mocking picks like Besure Bandits.

About antakshari team names

Antakshari is the Indian song-chain game: one team sings a few lines, and the next must answer with a song that begins on the sound the last one ended on. It is played at sangeet nights, family functions, office parties, college fests and long bus rides. The classic names for three sides are Deewane, Parwane and Mastane (the crazy ones, the moths and the carefree ones). This list of 1,000 names starts from that trio and adds other rhyming sets, such as Sureele, Rangeele and Albele, for an organizer naming three or four teams at once.

Most of the rest is built on music words in romanized Hindi and Urdu: sur (note), taal (rhythm), raag (melodic mode), dhun (tune), geet (song), sargam (the scale), mukhda and antara (a song's refrain and its verse) and riyaaz (practice). They are paired with group words such as toli and mandali, or with English ones: Sargam Squad, Geet Gang, Taal Titans. Where a non-Hindi speaker might be lost, the name carries a short English gloss in parentheses.

There are also names for eras and genres, for family, office, hostel and society teams, phrases from the game itself, and self-mocking names such as Besure Bandits. Twenty-two entries are borrowed film titles, song titles or film dialogue, each labeled as such.

How to choose antakshari team names

  • Naming three or four teams at once? Take a rhyming set so the scoreboard reads as one family. Deewane, Parwane and Mastane are the classic three, and Sureele, Rangeele and Albele or Fankaar, Kalakaar and Gulukaar work the same way.
  • Say the name the way the host will shout it. Two or three words with a beat, such as Taal Titans or Dhun Deewane, carry across a hall better than a long phrase.
  • Match the name to the crowd. Ladke Wale and Ladki Wale (the groom's side and the bride's side) suit a sangeet night, Accounts Ke Alaap an office party, and Hostellers against Day Scholars a college fest.
  • The words in parentheses are a gloss for guests who do not speak Hindi. Leave them off the scoreboard, or read them out once so everyone is in on the joke.
  • A self-mocking name takes the pressure off a team of shy singers. Besure Bandits or Riyaaz Kal Se (practice starts tomorrow) tells the room you came to play, not to audition.

Frequently asked questions

What are the traditional antakshari team names?

The classic set for three teams is Deewane, Parwane and Mastane: the crazy ones, the moths drawn to the flame and the carefree ones. All three are in the list, along with other rhyming sets such as Sureele, Rangeele and Albele for an organizer who wants a change.

How do you play antakshari?

Two or more teams take turns singing. One team sings the opening lines of a song, and the next has to answer with a song that starts on the sound the last one ended on, usually before the others finish counting to ten. House rules vary, but a team that cannot answer in time, or repeats a song already sung, generally gives up the point.

What do sur, taal, raag and mehfil mean in these names?

They are everyday music words in Hindi and Urdu. Sur is a musical note, taal is rhythm, raag is a melodic mode, dhun is a tune, geet is a song, and a mehfil is a gathering for music or poetry. Toli and mandali both mean a troop or group, which is why Taal Toli and Mehfil Mandali read as team names.

Are there Bollywood antakshari team names in the list?

A few. Twenty-two entries are borrowed straight from films: titles, song titles or lines of dialogue, such as Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Yeh Dosti, and each of those is labeled. Some everyday words in the list, such as Raaz or Andaaz, are also the titles of films and carry no label. The rest of the list is built on the game and on music words rather than on films, with plain English wordplay such as Last Letter Legends and Pass the Letter mixed in.
