Name ideas for sustainability projects and initiatives at schools, workplaces, councils and community groups, from recycling drives to rewilding plots. Examples include Project Second Life, The Refill Run, Operation Lights Out and Greener by Friday.

About sustainability project names

A sustainability project needs a name that tells people what is being run and makes them want to join in. Most good ones follow a few patterns. Codename forms put Project or Operation in front of a plain image, as in Project Second Life or Operation Lights Out. Action names state the job itself: The Refill Run, Chase the Draft, Fill the Tree Pits. Journey names join a start and an end, such as Rooftop to Roots or Scraps to Soil. Habit and deadline names set a rhythm, like Mend It Monday or Greener by Friday.

The last word tells people how big the commitment is. Pilot, Trial and Study say you are testing something. Drive, Sweep and Roundup suggest a short push with a clear end. Program, Plan and Roadmap fit work that runs for years, which is the register most workplace teams want.

This list has 1,000 names across waste and recycling, repair and refill, energy, water, food growing, composting, wildlife, tree planting, travel, classroom challenges, workplace programs, neighborhood projects and puns. The rooms, streets and wards in the names are stand-ins, so swap in your own.

How to choose sustainability project names

  • Name the action, not the ambition. The Leak Hunt tells people what they will be doing on Tuesday, and a grand name about saving the planet does not.
  • Match the last word to the length of the work: Pilot or Trial for a test, Drive or Week for a short push, Program or Plan for something with an owner and a budget line.
  • Do not let the name promise a result you have not measured. A goal name such as Half the Trash is fine when the first poster says it is a target and you report how close you got.
  • Leave the year out. A project that works will run again next term, and a dated name means new posters, new slides and a new logo.
  • Search the name with your town, school district or industry before you print it. Nobody has checked this list against existing programs, and many green campaign names are already in use by national ones.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good name for a sustainability project?

A good name says what is being run in a few plain words and is easy to say in a meeting or an assembly. The Compost Loop and Operation Leaky Tap each tell a stranger the subject at once. Short names also fit better on a bin label, a poster or a slide.

Should we call it a project, an initiative, a program or a challenge?

Project suits work with a start and an end, such as a student capstone or a one-term build. Initiative and program suit ongoing work with an owner and a budget, as in Packaging Reduction Program. Challenge fits anything with a scoreboard, like The Line Dry Challenge.

Are there names for workplace and corporate sustainability programs?

Yes. One group is written in a plain register for reports and all-staff emails, for example Responsible Sourcing Roadmap, The Product Take-Back Pilot and Site Water Stewardship Plan. None of them names an outside certification, a rating scheme or a measured result, so the name will not get ahead of what the program has done.

Can we use a pun for a serious project?

Often yes, especially where you need students or volunteers to notice a poster. Watt's Up, Mulch Ado About Nothing and Bin It to Win It are light without making fun of the work. For a board paper or a grant application, pair the pun with a plain subtitle that says what the project does.
