Generate spice names for any purpose: a reference list of real spices and traditional blends from around the world, product names for rubs and seasoning blends, invented spices for fantasy worlds and games, and names for spice shops and small-batch spice brands.

About spice names

Spice names come from four places, and each sounds different. The oldest are trade names that travelled with the spice: cinnamon, cumin, saffron, ginger and pepper all arrived in English through Greek, Latin and Arabic and still carry that long-distance feel. Regional blends are named for what they are or where they are from: garam masala (warming mixture), ras el hanout (head of the shop), za'atar, berbere, baharat, panch phoron (five seeds), shichimi togarashi (seven-flavor chili). A third group is commercial, the rubs and seasonings on a shop shelf, which are named for a place, a heat level, a cooking method or a promise: Memphis Dry Rub, Five Alarm, Smokehouse Rub, Pitmaster's Secret.

Invented spices for fiction work best when they copy the trade-name habit: one concrete word plus a real spice word (Ghost Saffron, Widow's Clove, Caravan Salt, Pilgrim's Pepper) reads like something a merchant would shout in a market, while stacking two made-up syllables reads like a potion. Real spice names also tell you about scarcity and origin: saffron is precious because it is thread-picked, so a fantasy spice called Cave Saffron or Silk Road Saffron instantly implies the same.

The list runs from real spices and blends, through product names for rubs and seasonings, to fantasy spices and spice shop brands.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For a rub or seasoning product, name the promise and the use: Brisket Bark, Burnt Ends Rub, Crab Boil and Everything Bagel tell the shopper what to put it on, which sells better than an abstract name like Inferno Blend.
  • Heat words are a scale, so use them honestly. Sweet Heat and Slow Burn signal mild, Five Alarm and Dragon's Breath signal hot, and Carolina Reaper or Ghost Pepper in the name signals the real chili is in the jar.
  • For a fantasy spice, pair a place, person or texture with a real spice word: Marshgold, Caravan Salt, Miller's Mace, Queen's Cardamom. Real trade names are plain, and the plainness is what makes them believable.
  • For a spice shop or brand, two nouns joined by an ampersand (Spice & Ember, Pestle & Pod, Thyme & Tide) is the dominant style; if you want to stand out, use a single made word like Blendsmith or Spicewright, or a street name like Saffron Row.
  • Check trademarks before printing labels. Old Bay, Tajín and Montreal Steak Spice are registered brands even though they read like generic blend names, and Maldon is a place and a trademark.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these are real spices and which are invented?

Everything from cinnamon through the traditional blends (garam masala, berbere, ras el hanout, za'atar, dukkah, shichimi togarashi, Old Bay, Cajun seasoning and so on) is real, including rarer spices such as grains of paradise, voatsiperifery, timut pepper, mahlab, wattleseed and korarima. Names like Ghost Saffron, Widow's Clove, Marshgold and Caravan Salt are invented for fantasy settings, and names such as Pitmaster's Secret or Spice & Ember are product and shop-style names written for this list.

What makes a good name for a spice blend or rub?

The best commercial spice names do three things: say what the blend goes on (Brisket Bark, Crab Boil, Taco Seasoning), place it on the heat scale (Sweet Heat, Five Alarm) and give it a place or a story (Memphis Dry Rub, Kansas City Sweet Heat, Abuela's Adobo). A name that does two of the three is usually strong enough.

How do I name a spice for a fantasy novel, D&D campaign or video game?

Use one real spice word as the anchor (pepper, clove, salt, saffron, cumin, mace, anise, seed, root, bark) and attach a single descriptive word about where it grows, who uses it or what it costs: Highpass Pepper, Ferryman's Salt, Kingscinnamon, Paupers' Pepper. Make the expensive ones threads or pods and the cheap ones roots and barks, which mirrors how real spice value works.

Can I use these names for a spice company or Etsy shop?

The shop and brand names here (Blendsmith, Spicewright, The Spice Apothecary, Saffron Row, Pinch & Dash) are offered for your use, and the product-style names can be used on your own blends. Real spice names and traditional blend names are generic and free to use. Search your country's trademark register and Etsy before committing, since spice brand names are crowded and a few generic-looking names, such as Old Bay and Tajín, are registered marks.
