Runner Name Generator

Runner names come in two registers, and this list covers both. The first is the nickname: the name on your Strava profile, your bib, your club singlet or the sign your family waves at mile 20. Good ones borrow running jargon (Negative Split, Fartlek, Tempo, Cadence, Taper, Bonk), the animals runners compare themselves to (Gazelle, Jackrabbit, Pronghorn, Greyhound), the heroes of the sport (Pheidippides, Atalanta, the Flying Finn, Pre) and the small miseries everyone recognises, from Blister Sister to Mile Twenty Mike. Alliteration with a first name, as in Tempo Tess or Hill Repeat Hannah, is the classic club-shirt format.

The second register is the realistic athlete name for a story, game or fantasy roster. Distance running is dominated by Kenya's Kalenjin names (Kipchoge, Cheruiyot, Jepkosgei, Chebet, where Kip- means son of and Che- or Je- means daughter of) and Ethiopian names such as Tadesse, Alemu and Gebre, while sprinting rosters read Jamaican and American. Japan's ekiden culture, Norway's new milers, Morocco's middle-distance tradition and the trail scenes of the Alps and the American West all have their own sound, so the full names here are drawn from each.
