About Romanian male names

Romanian men's names are easy to tell from women's. Almost every female name ends in -a (Ioana, Mihaela, Andreea), while male names end in a consonant or in -u, -e or -i: Ion, Radu, Vasile, Andrei. A handful of men's names do end in -a, among them Mircea, Horia, Toma and Luca. Surnames do not change with gender, so a brother and a sister are both Popescu or both Ciobanu.

The given names come in layers. Saints' names such as Gheorghe, Vasile, Dumitru and Nicolae mark the older generations, and many men still celebrate their saint's day. The Latinist movement of the nineteenth century, strongest in Transylvania, brought in Roman names: Traian, Ovidiu, Octavian, Aurel, Liviu. Men born in the 1970s and 80s are often Bogdan, Cătălin, Cosmin or Răzvan, and today's boys are Andrei, David, Matei and Rareș. Diminutives such as Ionuț, Costel and Nelu are often registered as legal names, and birth certificates commonly join two given names with a hyphen.

Surnames hint at a region. The -escu ending is at home in the south, short names such as Pop, Rus and Mureșan are Transylvanian, and forms built on a parent's name, like Apetrei and Aioanei, are Moldavian. The list keeps the letters ă, â, î, ș and ț, which change how a name sounds.

How to choose Romanian male names

  • Match the given name to the birth decade: Gheorghe or Vasile suits a grandfather, Cătălin or Cosmin a man born around 1980, Rareș or Matei a schoolboy.
  • Let the surname place him. Pop, Mureșan and Ardelean point to Transylvania, Apetrei and Agavriloaei to Moldavia, and the -escu names to Bucharest and the south.
  • Keep the diacritics when you can. Ș is sh and ț is ts, so Ștefan and Laurențiu sound wrong when they are typed as Stefan and Laurentiu.
  • In dialogue, use the vocative when one man calls another: Radu becomes Radule, Bogdan becomes Bogdane and Ion becomes Ioane.
  • Official forms and school registers put the surname first (Popescu Ion), while everyday speech puts the given name first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Romanian male names?

Among older men the saints' names lead: Ion, Gheorghe, Vasile, Constantin, Nicolae and Dumitru. Among boys born in recent years, Andrei, David, Alexandru, Matei and Luca are heard most often. The list covers both ends, from Toader Ciupercă to Darius Stoica.

Do Romanian surnames have a male and a female form?

No. Unlike Russian, Bulgarian or Czech surnames, a Romanian surname has one form for the whole family, so every surname here also works for a character's mother, wife or sister. Only the given name shows gender: Ion and Ioana, Mihai and Mihaela, Gabriel and Gabriela.

How are the special letters pronounced?

Ș is the English sh and ț is ts, so Ștefan starts with sht and Laurențiu has a ts in the middle. Ă is the neutral vowel at the start of the English word about. Â and î are two spellings of one sound, a vowel made further back in the mouth that English does not have.

Are these the names of real people?

The given names and surnames are all in everyday use in Romania, and the list pairs them into ordinary combinations such as Titus Mureșan or Cătălin Frunză. Because the parts are common, some pairs are bound to match a real person by chance. None of them is meant to point to anyone in particular.
