Playa Name Generator

A playa name is the nickname you answer to in Black Rock City, and the unwritten rule is that someone else gives it to you. It usually comes from one moment: you fixed six bikes with one spanner, or slept through a whiteout in a hammock. Because the origin story is the point, the best playa names are short, concrete and a little unflattering. One-word handles (Spigot, Thimble, Gasket), odd two-word mashups (Dusty Pretzel, Velvet Jackhammer) and mock titles (Dame Dehydration, the Sultan of Shade) all sound right; names that try to be cool usually do not.

The vocabulary comes from the playa and the work of living on it for a week: alkali dust, caliche, rebar and lag bolts, shade structures and hexayurts, zip ties and gaff tape, art cars, sound camps, the Esplanade, deep playa, the trash fence, DPW, Rangers and Greeters. Camp-kitchen staples (pickle juice, cold brew, mezcal) and costume fabrics (tulle, faux fur, sequins) are the other big source, which is why so many playa names sound like a vending machine fell on a hardware store.
