Portuguese given names with Mozambican family names
Generate realistic Mozambican full names: Portuguese given names with Changana, Ronga, Chopi, Sena and Makua family names, such as Lurdes Macuácua and Leonardo Sitoe, beside Muslim names of the northern coast such as Mariamo Atumane.
About Mozambican names
A Mozambican name usually has a Portuguese first half and an African second half. Portuguese was the language of baptism, school and the civil register under colonial rule, which ended in 1975, and it remains the official language, so given names such as Lurdes, Gertrudes and Leonardo are everywhere. The family name comes from one of the country's Bantu languages. In the south, around Maputo and Gaza, Changana, Ronga and Chopi families are called Macamo, Sitoe, Cossa, Langa, Tembe and Nhantumbo. The centre, where Sena and Ndau are spoken, adds names such as Simango and Mulambo, and the north has Makua and Makonde names such as Katupha and Chipande.
The northern coast has been Muslim for centuries, and its names are Arabic ones in Portuguese spelling: Amade, Momade, Issufo and Ussene for men, Mariamo, Atija and Abiba for women. A father's given name often serves as the surname there, as in Selemane Omar.
Spelling follows Portuguese rules. Nh is the sound English writes ny, and names shared with South Africa appear as Cossa, Sitoe and Balói instead of Khosa, Sithole and Baloyi. Official names often run to three parts, with a second name that is in many families the father's, as in Delfina Moisés Muchanga. The list mixes two-part and three-part names with single surnames and given names.
How to choose Mozambican names
- Start with the region. Macamo, Sitoe, Cossa and Chaúque belong to Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane in the south, Simango and Mulambo to the centre around Beira and Chimoio, Phiri and Banda to Tete, and Katupha, Chipande or a Muslim name such as Ussene Atumane to the north.
- Keep the accents and the European Portuguese spellings that Mozambique uses: Eugénio and Verónica, not the Brazilian Eugênio and Verônica.
- Use a three-part name such as David Lourenço Manhiça for documents, school registers and formal introductions, and the given name with the family name everywhere else.
- For a character from the south, look at the Old Testament names in Portuguese dress, such as Zefanias, Jossias, Naftal and Fenias. They are far more common in Mozambique than in Portugal.
- Given names and surnames are paired at random, so search the full name before you give it to a published character.
Frequently asked questions
Why do most Mozambicans have Portuguese first names?
Mozambique was under Portuguese rule until 1975, and baptism, schooling and civil registration were all carried out in Portuguese, which remains the official language. Families kept their own surnames beside the Portuguese given names, which is why the list has combinations such as Rita Macamo and Gertrudes Cossa. A Portuguese first name can also stand in the surname position, as in Noémia Francisco and Lídia Tomás.
What are common Mozambican surnames?
In the south the best known include Macamo, Sitoe, Cossa, Langa, Tembe, Nhantumbo, Matsinhe, Mabunda, Muianga and Chaúque, and Mondlane and Simango are familiar across the country. In the Muslim north, surnames are often given names such as Momade and Issufo. The list shows these as single surnames as well as inside full names.
Why is Khosa written Cossa in Mozambique?
The same Tsonga family names are found on both sides of the border, but Mozambique writes them by Portuguese spelling rules and South Africa by English-influenced ones. Khosa becomes Cossa, Sithole becomes Sitoe or Sitole, Baloyi becomes Balói or Valoi and Maluleke becomes Maluleque. The list uses the Mozambican forms throughout, as in Laura Balói and Ivan Maluleque.
Are the Muslim names in the list Mozambican too?
Yes. Islam reached the northern coast through Indian Ocean trade long before the Portuguese arrived, and it is still the main religion of much of Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa. The names are the familiar Arabic ones written the Portuguese way: Amade for Ahmad, Momade for Muhammad, Issufo for Yusuf, Mariamo for Maryam and Abiba for Habiba.
