Generate newspaper names for Latin class and Roman history projects: Latin mastheads with an English gloss, such as Nuntius Romanus (the Roman messenger) and Praeco Fori (the Forum crier), and English titles such as The Forum Herald and The Daily Denarius.

About Latin newspaper names

Rome had no printing press, but it did have daily news. From 59 BC, the year of Julius Caesar's first consulship, public notices known as the Acta Diurna were posted in the city, and a separate record covered the proceedings of the Senate. Both names are in this list once, labeled as historical. Every other entry is a masthead idea for a project, a game or a story, many built on real Roman places and phrases.

The 1,000 names come in two kinds. A little over half are Latin titles with an English gloss in parentheses. They use the Roman words for news and its carriers: nuntius (messenger), praeco (crier), fama (rumor), vox (voice), acta (things done) and tempora (times). An adjective agrees with its noun, so the list has Nuntius Romanus but Vox Romana, and a place or an owner goes into the genitive, as in Praeco Fori, the Forum crier. The rest are English titles on Roman themes, such as The Forum Herald, The Daily Denarius and The Appian Way Post.

Both kinds cover Rome's hills and streets, provinces from Britain to Egypt, the Senate, the Circus, markets and harbors, army camps and the schoolroom. There are also short mottos that work as a nameplate, such as Fama Volat (rumor flies), and puns for a lighter paper.

How to choose Latin newspaper names

  • Keep the gloss as your subtitle. A masthead that reads Nuntius Romanus with "the Roman messenger" in small type underneath looks right and tells your reader what it means.
  • To move a Latin title to another town, change only the place and keep its ending pattern. After a noun such as Praeco or Vox the place goes into the genitive (Praeco Londinii, Vox Galliae), so the simplest route is a title from the list that already names your place.
  • Match the paper to your story. Titles with Acta or Tabulae suit official notices, titles with Castrorum or Legionis suit an army camp bulletin, and Circus titles suit a sports page.
  • Show a Latin title to your teacher before it goes on a poster. The entries are drafted on standard grammar patterns, and a second pair of eyes costs nothing.
  • For a period touch, date your issue the Roman way, by the Kalends, the Nones or the Ides, and give prices in denarii.

Frequently asked questions

Did the Romans have newspapers?

Not printed ones. From 59 BC daily public notices called the Acta Diurna were posted in Rome, which is the closest thing the city had to a daily paper. The list includes Acta Diurna and Acta Senatus once each, labeled as historical, and every other name is a masthead idea in the same spirit.

What does Nuntius mean in a newspaper name?

Nuntius means messenger, and also the message or news he brings, which makes it a natural Latin word for a paper. In the list it takes an adjective that agrees with it, as in Nuntius Romanus (the Roman messenger) and Nuntius Castrensis (the camp messenger), or a genitive, as in Nuntius Mercatorum (the merchants' messenger).

Is the Latin correct?

The Latin titles use real words and the standard patterns of agreement and case, and each one carries a plain English gloss so you can see what it says. No classicist has gone through the list, so ask your teacher to confirm a title before you print it. Some entries are famous quotations, such as Fama Volat and O Tempora, O Mores, and are not original to this page.

Which names work for a school Roman newspaper project?

For a serious front page try Tempora Urbis (the City times), The Forum Herald or The Palatine Gazette. For a lighter class paper, The Toga Times, Hot Off the Wax Tablet and Veni, Vidi, Scripsi (I came, I saw, I wrote) get a smile without leaving ancient Rome.
