Hittite Name Generator
Names from the tablets of Hattusa and beyond
Generate Hittite names from the records of Bronze Age Anatolia: kings and queens such as Suppiluliuma and Puduhepa, officials like Walwaziti the Chief Scribe, ritual authors like Mastigga of Kizzuwatna, and rulers such as Alaksandu of Wilusa.
About Hittite names
The Hittites ruled much of Anatolia from their capital Hattusa between roughly 1650 and 1180 BCE, and their clay tablet archives preserve a large stock of personal names. The record is mixed by nature. Hittite names stand beside Luwian ones, older Hattian ones and, under the empire, Hurrian names in the royal family itself: Puduhepa, Urhi-Teshub and Tasmi-Sharruma name the deities Hebat, Teshub and Sharruma.
Some compound types recur. The Luwian endings -ziti (man) and -muwa (strength) appear in Walwaziti, Armaziti and Mittannamuwa, and queens named for Hebat include Daduhepa and Danuhepa.
The list covers the Old Kingdom and empire courts, officials and scribes of the Tapikka letters and the Hattusa archives, authors of rituals such as Mastigga of Kizzuwatna, rulers of western Anatolia such as Alaksandu of Wilusa, and Iron Age kings of Carchemish, Malatya and Tabal. An entry with a title, a seat or a father's name repeats a recorded name with a detail from the record, as in Hattusili of Hakpis. An entry with a note in parentheses is a deity or a figure of myth, not a person. Spellings are simplified, without the diacritics of scholarly transliteration.
How to choose Hittite names
- Choose a period first. Old Kingdom names such as Hantili, Zidanta and Ammuna are short and plain, while empire names such as Talmi-Teshub and Ehli-Sharruma often carry the name of a Hurrian deity.
- Use the seat to place a character on the map: Uhhaziti of Arzawa in the west, Sunassura of Kizzuwatna in the southeast, Piyassili of Carchemish on the Euphrates.
- For women, look at the queens and the authors of rituals: Asmunikal, Harapsili and Gassulawiya from the court, Tunnawi, Anniwiyani and Allaiturahhi from the ritual texts.
- Officials and scribes make good names for ordinary characters. Anuwanza the Scribe, Hanikkuili and Tarhunmiya are people who wrote or copied tablets, not kings.
- Keep the deities apart. Anything with a note in parentheses, such as Kamrusepa (goddess of magic and healing), is a god or a figure of myth and would be an odd name for a mortal.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Hittite names?
The names come from the records of the Hittite kingdom and its successor states: annals, treaties, letters, ritual texts, seals and hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions. The list was drafted from memory of those sources and has not been checked by specialists, so confirm a name in a published edition before you rely on it. Where more entries were needed, a recorded name is repeated with a recorded title, seat or father, as in Kamani son of Astiruwa, and no new compounds were built.
Which entries are gods and not people?
Every deity or figure of myth has a note in parentheses, such as Hebat (queen of the gods), Arma (moon god) and Illuyanka (serpent of myth). Telipinu and Kurunta appear both with and without a note because a king and a god share each name. Every entry without a note is a person named in the texts.
What do the endings -ziti and -muwa mean?
Both are Luwian name elements. Ziti means man and muwa means strength or might, and each is joined to a first element that is often the name of a deity or a place. Halwaziti, Sippaziti, Upparamuwa and Abamuwa on this list follow the pattern.
Does the list include the Hittites of the Bible?
No. Figures such as Uriah and Ephron belong to the biblical tradition and are not known from the records of the Hittite kingdom, so they are left out here. The rulers of Ugarit and Amurru, who were Hittite vassals in Syria, are on the Canaanite page, and this list keeps to Anatolia, Carchemish and the Neo-Hittite states.
