Generate folk song titles in the manner of traditional ballads, shanties and airs, and of the modern acoustic songs that borrow from them, such as The Ballad of Hattie Crane, Haul Her Home to Halifax and Lament for the Last Ferry.

About folk song names

Folk song titles tend to say plainly what the song is about: a person, a place, a trade or a parting. Famous traditional examples such as Barbara Allen, Scarborough Fair and Shenandoah are just a name or a place. Many others use stock frames that anyone may borrow: The Ballad of, Come All Ye, Fare Thee Well, Lament for, The Bonny. A dance tune is often named for a person, a trade or a place, with its type added: a reel, a jig, a hornpipe or a waltz.

The 1,000 titles here are new titles in that manner, not a list of traditional songs. They cover narrative and murder ballads, sea shanties and forebitters, work songs of mine, mill, field and railroad, courtship songs, emigration and farewell songs, laments and slow airs, drinking songs, union and protest songs, carols and seasonal songs, dance tunes, songs of rivers and hills, comic songs, Appalachian old-time titles and quiet modern indie-folk. Shanties timed the hauling and heaving on sailing ships, while forebitters were sung off watch.

Use a title as a songwriting prompt, a track on a fictional album or a song for a tavern scene in a game. Because the frames are shared, an old song may already carry a similar name, so search before you release anything.

How to choose folk song names

  • Pick the frame for the kind of song: The Ballad of for a story with a named person, Lament for or a slow air for grief, a come-all-ye for a song that speaks to a trade or a town.
  • Swap in your own names and places. A title like The Wreck of the Anna Bright or Farewell to Mossy Hollow gets more convincing with a river, a county or a surname from your own setting or family.
  • Match the title to who sings it. A shanty title is a shouted line a crew can answer (Pump Her Dry, Boys), a courtship song names the sweetheart, and a dance tune needs no words, only its type.
  • For a believable set list or fictional album, mix the types: two ballads, a work song, a drinking song, a lament and a pair of tunes read like a real night in a folk club.
  • Search the title before you record. Traditional songs share frames and stock phrases, so make sure a well-known song does not already go by the same name.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real traditional folk songs?

No. The list holds new titles in the manner of traditional song, such as Three Crows at the Gate, The Night Shift at Number Nine and Fare Thee Well, Annalee. None of them comes with a history, a region or a collector. A title may still happen to match a song that exists somewhere, so search before you publish.

Can I use a title for my own song, set list or story?

Yes. Titles on their own are generally not protected by copyright, so you can use one as a working title, a track name or a song inside a novel or a game. Look it up on streaming services first so your song is not confused with an existing one.

What is the difference between a ballad, a shanty and an air?

A ballad tells a story in verses, often about a named person or event. A shanty is a work song from sailing ships, with a line for one singer and an answer for the crew. An air is a melody, often slow, that may or may not have words. The list has all three, for example The Ballad of Tobias Wren, Capstan Round at Dawn and Slow Air for Margaret.

How do I make a folk song title sound older or more modern?

Older-sounding titles pair a frame with a concrete noun: a trade, a river, a first name or a season, as in The Bonny Weaver Lad or Plough Monday Morning. Modern indie-folk titles drop the frame and keep one small domestic image, as in Woodsmoke in My Sweater or Tin Roof, Soft Rain.
