About elcor names

The elcor of Mass Effect come from Dekuuna, a high-gravity world where a fall can kill, and everything about them is slow, heavy and deliberate. Among themselves they talk through scent, tiny shifts of posture and sounds below human hearing, so to other species their speech comes out as a flat monotone. To avoid being misread they state the emotion first, "Genuine enthusiasm" or "Tired resignation", and then the sentence.

The elcor we meet in the games go by one short, blunt name. Harrot runs a shop on Omega in Mass Effect 2, Calyn is the ambassador who shares a Citadel office with the volus Din Korlack, and Xeltan is the diplomat in the first game's Consort side quest. Petozi follows the same pattern with a third syllable. The shape is two or three syllables, with plain vowels and consonants such as r, t, l and n.

Those four names are in this list as anchors, and the rest are invented in the same style. Most entries are single names such as Barrut, Dalyn, Matozi and Xumbar. Others add a title, a home (Hurbat of Dekuuna) or the stated emotion in front, as in With pride: Horruk. The longer formal names, such as Dekoruntal, are our own idea for elders and not a pattern from the games.

How to choose elcor names

  • Read it in a flat voice. Elcor speech is a slow monotone, so a good name survives being said with no stress at all. Barrut, Dorrag and Tundok do, and anything that needs a lilt does not.
  • Choose the emotion for the character, not for the name. A shopkeeper might open with Rehearsed sales pitch: Mordut, a diplomat with Professional courtesy: Tolvar and a worn-out clerk with Tired resignation: Dastun. Swap the prefixes between names as you like.
  • Use a title to show standing. Elder Tumbrok carries more weight than the bare name, and Ambassador Torlun or Merchant Horbak tells a reader the character's job right away.
  • Keep to one name. The elcor in the games use a single name, so add a home such as Hurbat of Dekuuna only when two characters need telling apart.
  • Remember the theater. The games advertise an all-elcor production of Hamlet, which is why the list has a few actors, Actor Hamrot among them.

Frequently asked questions

What are elcor names like in Mass Effect?

Short, blunt and heavy: Harrot, Calyn, Xeltan and Petozi are the models, with two or three syllables, plain vowels and consonants such as r, t, l and n. The invented names here lean on u, d and k as well, for the same low, slow sound. In this list Barrut, Dorrag and Tundok follow Harrot, Dalyn and Beltan follow Calyn and Xeltan, and Matozi and Kolanu end on an open vowel like Petozi.

Why do some names start with an emotion?

Elcor state their emotion before they speak, because other species cannot read the scent and posture cues that carry it among elcor. Entries such as With pride: Horruk and Genuine enthusiasm: Belgor borrow that habit for an introduction. They work well as the first line of a character sheet or as the way an NPC greets the party.

Do elcor have surnames or clan names?

The elcor we meet in the games use a single name, which is why most of this list is single names. Forms such as Elder Tumbrok or Hurbat of Dekuuna are a storyteller's way to tell two characters apart, not something the games establish.

Can I use these names for fan fiction or a tabletop game?

Yes. They suit a Mass Effect campaign, fan fiction, or any setting that needs a slow, heavy, scrupulously polite giant. We have not checked the invented names against every character in the games, comics and novels, so search a name first if it matters to you that no minor character shares it.
