Generate Darling in the Franxx names for fan characters and stories: code numbers that read as Japanese names, such as Code 373: Minami and Code 123: Hifumi, plus FRANXX units named for plant genera like Gentiana and Camellia, numbered Plantations, squads and klaxosaur classes.

About Darling in the Franxx names

In Darling in the Franxx the child pilots, called parasites, are known only by code numbers until Hiro starts reading the digits as names. The trick is goroawase, Japanese number wordplay: Code 016 becomes Hiro (hi, ro), 015 Ichigo (ichi, go) and 056 Goro (go, ro). A leading zero stays silent.

Every original code here is built the same way from these readings: 0 is o, re, rei, ma or wa; 1 is i, hi, hito or ichi; 2 is ni, fu, tsu or ji; 3 is mi, sa or san; 4 is yo or shi; 5 is go, ko or itsu; 6 is ro, ru, mu or roku; 7 is na, nana or shichi; 8 is ha, ya or hachi; 9 is ku or kyu; 10 is to or ju. So Code 373 is Minami and Code 123 is Hifumi. No code is given to two names, and the eleven parasites from the series are marked (canon).

FRANXX units carry botanical names, so the originals are real plant genera such as Gentiana, Camellia and Wisteria, some with a species name attached. Klaxosaur classes take names from seismology, so the originals use seismologists such as Richter and Wadati. The list also holds numbered Plantations and squads, more Nines by Greek letter, sages with primate names, weapons, staff and nicknames.

How to choose Darling in the Franxx names

  • To build your own code, split the name into syllables and give each one a digit. Ha-ru-ko is 8-6-5, so Haruko is Code 865. If a syllable has no number reading, the name cannot be a code.
  • Short names take a silent leading zero, the way Hiro is 016. Code 087: Hana and Code 096: Kuro both read from two digits.
  • Name a FRANXX after a flowering genus and let the plant set the look of the machine: Aconitum, the poisonous monkshood, for a dark and dangerous unit, or Leontopodium, the edelweiss, for one built for the mountains.
  • Give a squad the number of its Plantation, as Squad 13 belongs to Plantation 13 in the series. In this list Plantation 16: Tulipa goes with Squad 16, the Seedlings.
  • Say which names come from the series when you share a story. Here those entries carry (canon), and everything else is original fan naming.

Frequently asked questions

How do the code numbers in Darling in the Franxx turn into names?

Through goroawase, the Japanese habit of reading digits as syllables. Hiro reads Code 016 as hi-ro and Code 015 as ichi-go. The originals in this list work the same way: Code 446: Yoshiro is yo-shi-ro, and Code 073: Nami is na-mi behind a silent zero.

What are the FRANXX units named after?

Plants. Delphinium, Genista and Chlorophytum are plant genera, and Strelizia follows Strelitzia, the bird of paradise flower. The original units here are real genera too, from Gentiana and Camellia to Wisteria and Aconitum, with some full species names such as Camellia Japonica.

Why do klaxosaur classes have names like Gutenberg and Lehmann?

The names come from seismology. The Conrad, Mohorovicic, Gutenberg and Lehmann discontinuities are boundaries inside the Earth, each named for a seismologist. The original classes in this list continue with other seismologists, for example Richter-class, Omori-class and Wadati-class.

Are these names taken from the series?

Only the entries marked (canon), such as Code 016: Hiro (canon) and Strelizia (canon). Everything else was written for fan characters, squads and stories and does not appear in the series. This site has no connection with the makers of Darling in the Franxx.
