Generate curling team names for leagues, bonspiels and club nights: puns like Sweeping Beauties, House of Stones and Hog Line Heroes, skip jokes such as Blame the Skip, and plain rink names like Old Mill Curling Club.

About curling team names

Curling gives a team more to joke about than almost any sport. Two teams of four slide granite stones down a sheet of ice toward the house, a target of rings with the button at its center, while teammates sweep the ice ahead of the stone to carry it farther and keep it straighter. Every one of those words is a pun in waiting: Rock Solid, Sweeping Beauties, House of Stones, On the Button.

The strategy vocabulary is just as rich. The hammer is the last stone of an end, so Got the Hammer is a curling name, and a side that scores without it has a steal, hence Steal Magnolias. A stone has to clear the hog line to stay in play (Hog Line Heroes), the skip calls the shots and shouts for sweeping (Hurry Harder, Blame the Skip), and a tournament is a bonspiel, which gives you No Big Spiel and Funspielers.

Competitive rinks usually go by their skip's surname, so a league name is where a team shows some personality. The list mixes stone and broom puns, house and hammer jokes, shot terms, hog line wordplay, position humor and curl puns with a share of plain club-style names, such as Old Mill Curling Club or Tuesday Night Draw, for rinks that would rather sound established than funny.

How to choose curling team names

  • Say it the way the draw sheet will show it. Two or three words such as Clean Sweep or Hog Wild fit a scoreboard and a league schedule without being cut short.
  • Match the pun to the room. Club regulars will enjoy Negative Ice, Positive Attitude or Control Weight Freaks, while a corporate funspiel full of first-timers will get Sweeping Beauties at once.
  • Name the team for how you play. Hitters suit Takeout Artists or Peel Good, a finesse team suits Quick Draw, and honest beginners can own Wide and Heavy or It Didn't Curl.
  • If the four of you plan to enter bonspiels for years, a club-style name such as Frost Hollow Curling Club or Thistle and Broom ages better than a joke about this winter's film.
  • Look at last season's standings before you register. Rock Solid and Clean Sweep are popular choices, so keep a second name ready.

Frequently asked questions

What are some funny curling team names?

Puns on the sport's own words work best: Sweeping Beauties, House of Stones, Hog Line Heroes, Broom Service, Taken for Granite and Curl, Interrupted are all in the list. For something drier, try Good Line, Bad Weight or We Thought This Was Shuffleboard.

What does hurry hard mean in curling?

It is the call that tells the sweepers to sweep as hard and as fast as they can. Sweeping makes a stone travel farther and curl less, so the call comes when a shot looks light or is bending too much. Names such as Hurry Harder and Hurry Hard or Go Home play on it.

How many players are on a curling team?

A standard team has four players: the lead, the second, the third (also called the vice-skip) and the skip, and many teams carry a fifth as an alternate. Mixed doubles is played by two. Lead Balloons, Second Thoughts, Third Wheel and Fifth Element come from that lineup, and Doubles Trouble suits a pair.

What is a bonspiel?

A bonspiel is a curling tournament, usually played over a weekend with several games for each team and plenty of socializing between them. A casual one is often called a funspiel. One-off names such as Bonspiel Bound, Spiel the Beans or Funspielers are made for that kind of event.
