Generate titles for fictional police TV series: precinct procedurals like Harbor Division and Tucson Homicide, detective dramas like DCI Reed and Lieutenant Varga, and comedies like Precinct Potluck. Made for screenwriters, novelists who need a show within a story, sketch writers and game masters.

About cop show names

A police series usually tells you what kind of show it is in the title. American procedurals lean on a place and a unit: a numbered precinct, a division, a city followed by Homicide or Robbery. British and Irish dramas prefer a rank and a surname, or a small town followed by Murders or Mysteries. Nordic series often take a harbor town, a season or the weather. Workplace comedies pick the least glamorous corner of the job and name the show after it.

The 1,000 titles here cover those patterns: numbered precincts and districts, city units, radio codes and jargon, rank and surname leads, partner pairs, one-word prestige dramas, CID and DCI titles, place-name murder series, Australian, New Zealand and Nordic stations, comedies and mockumentaries, rookie and patrol shows, specialist units from K-9 to cyber crime, rural sheriffs and marshals, period pieces from gaslight to dial-up, and shows set in dispatch rooms and crime labs.

Every entry is a series title, the line a TV listing would print, not a character, a department or an episode. The characters and precinct numbers are invented, the cities are real and the small towns are real or made up, but nobody has compared the list with real broadcast schedules, so search a title before you attach it to a project.

How to choose cop show names

  • Pick the format before the title. Ensemble procedurals take a place or a unit (Harbor Division, Tucson Homicide), single-lead dramas take a rank and a surname (Lieutenant Varga, DCI Reed), and two-handers take a pair (Okafor & Lindqvist).
  • Match the vocabulary to the country. CID, DCI, DI and DS belong to British forces, Garda ranks to Ireland, senior constables and senior sergeants to Australia, and precincts, lieutenants and sheriffs to the United States.
  • For a show within a story, choose a title that gives away the genre at once: a numbered precinct for a gritty drama, something like Barking Dog Detail for a comedy.
  • Say it the way a continuity announcer would, after the words "Tonight on". Titles of one to three words fit a schedule grid and survive being shouted across a room.
  • Search any title you like before you pitch or publish with it. A plain title can already belong to a series somewhere, including one that never aired in your country.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real cop shows?

No. The titles were drafted for this page in the style of the genre, with invented characters and precinct numbers. The cities are real, and the small towns are real or made up. Nobody has compared the list with every broadcast, streaming or foreign-language series, so treat a match with a real show as possible and search before you rely on a title.

What do CID, DCI, DI and DS mean in the British-style titles?

CID is the Criminal Investigation Department, the plain-clothes detective branch of a British police force. DCI, DI and DS are the ranks Detective Chief Inspector, Detective Inspector and Detective Sergeant. Titles such as Fenland CID, DCI Reed and DS Garforth use them the way a British schedule would.

Which titles work for a police comedy or mockumentary?

Look for the ones about the least dramatic parts of the job: Parking Enforcement, Precinct Potluck, Noise Complaint, The Slowest Precinct in Ohio. A flat, slightly bureaucratic title tells the audience that the paperwork is the joke. Save the radio codes and numbered precincts for dramas.

Can I use one of these titles for a script, a novel or a game?

Yes. For a fictional show inside a story, a title such as Signal 13 or The Night Desk needs nothing more. For a project you plan to pitch or publish under that title, search for existing series with the same name first.
