Traditional cheeses are usually named for where they come from. Cheddar is a village in Somerset, Gouda is a Dutch city, Camembert is a village in Normandy and Brie is a region east of Paris. Many old names are legally protected in Europe: Roquefort, Stilton and Parmigiano Reggiano can only be made in a set area by set methods.
